Summertime is here – yay! we get to enjoy warmer and longer days along with backyard barbecues, beach time and likely more socializing with friends and family. When the seasons change, the support we need to be healthy can also change. Here are some of my most versatile health coaching tips to bring new healthy habits to support your body and mind as the summertime season begins.
- Stay Hydrated – Staying hydrated is necessary year round, but during the warmer months proper hydration is essential as the risk of dehydration increases due to the heat. Being properly hydrated provides many benefits from aiding digestion, regulating body temperature, preventing headaches along with improving both our physical and mental performance. Hydration promotes healthy skin too! It’s best to sip water consistently throughout the day, as opposed to drinking when thirst appears. Ideally start your day with a glass of warm (even hot) water with a squeeze of lemon, as this kick-starts digestion. It’s also a way to get ahead of any dehydration you may experience if you are a morning coffee drinker, as I am! If plain water is unappealing, flavor it up with mint, cucumber slices or a twist of lime.
- Get Outside – An obvious tip I know BUT for those of us that may be unable to spend significant time outdoors, here are some ideas to grab small outdoor moments, helping to recharge when needed. Have your morning beverage on your front porch, take a short walk after dinner, or during your workday. Find a shady spot outside to use your laptop. (One of my favorites!). Savor what you can experience. When more time is available visit the beach, a park, or even explore the benefits of gardening.
- Seasonal Foods – As seasons change, so should our diet. In summer, adjusting our diet to focus on raw, cooling and water based foods helps us to naturally balance out the heat. Incorporate more salads, and juicy fruits like watermelon, mango, and melons, to name a few.
- Sun Skin Care – Catch those vitamin Ds but don’t forget that sunscreen! Have a hat handy to minimize sun exposure on your face, neck and ears.
- Watch Caffeine Intake – Too much caffeine can disrupt temperature regulation, which can be problematic as the days get hotter. It can also exacerbate dehydration, particularly if water intake is inadequate.
- Keep Connected – Embrace the longer days by connecting with loved ones. Strong social connections enrich our lives and have a positive effect on our mental health. Positive relationships increase our happiness leading to better emotional health. Take advantage of the summer season by making plans with people you care about.
- Digital Detox – Summer is the perfect time of year to reduce our screen time. Winter lends itself to binge watching TV but in summer we can reconnect with the real world. It’s easier to carve out alternative activities such as reading, starting a new hobby (pickleball anyone?!) and spending time with friends and family. A specific area can be designated as a tech-free zone, like the dining table or beach for example. Turn off non-essential notifications. Try to make it a habit which might even stick as time goes by!
These are just a few ideas on how to prioritize your health and wellness, AND enjoy the season. Try them and you’ll be on your way to having an unforgettable summer!
